Academic Policies
All students will receive the most current and complete "Academic Policies and Procedures" handbook at the time they enroll and on their first day of class.
Upon completion of this course of study, it is our goal that the student will be trained to enter the field of Massage Therapy in an entry level position, and be prepared to pass all the licensing requirements to become a Licensed Massage Therapist in the state of New Mexico. The entire 35 credit hour course (720 contact hours) can be completed in 8.5 months for the day or afternoon course, and 10.5 months for the evening course. However, students are allowed up to 12 months to complete the day and afternoon courses, and 15 months for the evening course.
Student Involvement in Decisions and Policies
Student suggestions and input are welcome and very much appreciated. The staff is available at all times to answer any questions you may have regarding policies and procedures.
Internship/Clinical Practicum
Practicum of no less than 150 hours is required to complete the Therapeutic Massage program. This coud include a limited number of assigned administration tasks in lieu of client massages upon client no-shows.
A minimum of 210 (150 + 60) clinical internship hours are required for the Therapeutic Medical Massage program. A separate Internship Policies and Procedures packet will be given to each student as they enter the basic massage segment of the Therapeutic Massage program and/or required hours of the Therapeutic Medical Massage program. Conversion of Contact Hours to Credit Hours
A contact hour is defined as a minimum of 50 minutes of supervised or directed instruction. One semester credit hour is given for 15 hours of classroom lecture, one semester credit hour is given for 15 hours of classroom lecture, one semester credit hour is given for 30 hours of supervised hands on instruction, and one semester credit is given for each 45 hours of internship experience. Each student completing the 720-contact hour Therapeutic Massage program will be granted the equivalent of 35 semester credits, and for the 1080-contact hour Therapeutic Medical Massage program; 51.5 semester credits.
Transfer of Credits or Contact Hours
The School cannot guarantee the transferability of its hours to any other educational institution. That transferability is up to the receiving institution. UTMI has two brochures that might be useful. They are available on the UTMI website for graduates.
Students transferring from another school to UTMI may be given credit for classes already completed. The School will allow the transfer of credits from another school after reviewing the student's transcript and determining the the transferring credits correspond to the School's established curriculum. Please contact the School for more details. Ask for a copy of "UTMI's Policy on Transferring Credits from other Schools".
Changes in Program and Tuition Charges
UTMI reserves the right to add or delete certain subjects from the program as circumstances may require, and to modify tuition rates/costs of supplies before enrollment. The program contents, training materials and schedule may also be changed by the school without notice with no additional expenses to the student. Your cost of attending school at UTMI will not change once you sign an enrollment agreement. We are very open on our pricing. There will be no hidden or unknown charges from the school. However, certain polices or actions on the student’s part may incur additional costs - such as not showing up for your clinic massage - please ask for a catalog and a copy of our student policies.
Tuition changes in programs are bona fide, effective on specific dates and applicable to all that enroll thereafter. Tuition for students presently in school is changed only if authorized in the enrollment agreement.
Graduation Requirements
- Minimum grade point average of 70 percent.
- Completion of all class requirements (such as homework, quizzes, mid-term/final exams, make-up classes, internship etc.) as well as completion of the appropriate number of credits / hours for the diploma awarded.
- All financial, academic and other obligations to the school must be taken care of before a diploma or transcript will be issued.
